Explore the Indigenous City of Mahiyanganaya and Savor the Adventure of Maduru Oya National Park

This journey offers an enriching experience if you wish to explore Sri Lanka's Dry Zone, combining ancient culture, man-made tanks, and deep jungle adventures. Located just two hours from Kandy, Mahiyanganaya is a serene escape from urban life.

Mahiyanganaya is home to the ancient Mahiyanganaya Raja Maha Viharaya, believed to be the site of Gautama Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka, and the indigenous village of Dambana. The city is also surrounded by a number of large man-made reservoirs.

The peaceful surroundings of the Pagoda and Bodhi Tree at Mahiyanganaya Raja Maha Viharaya will provide you an ideal setting for reflection, especially in the evenings under the moonlight.

The Dambana Wedi Gammanaya village is home to the indigenous Vedda people. Here, you can learn about Sri Lanka’s prehistoric culture through museum visits and cultural shows. Also the small shops in the village offer various items if you wish to take home a piece of local culture as a souvenir.

Close by, Loggal Oya and Sorabora Wewa are among few man made large reservoirs. We can arrange for you to cycle through the picturesque village roads leading to these reservoirs, take a dip in the natural water pools, and experience the culture by talking to the villagers and visiting the local boutiques.

In this guided experience, we invite you to venture into Maduru Oya National Park — a hidden gem. A rough, yet rewarding journey through the park's bushy trails will lead you to a remote wilderness. The park is less crowded, making it ideal for spotting large groups of elephants and various bird species. We’ll also pause at a campsite by the Maduru Oya tank, where you can enjoy a snack while quietly observing wildlife, undisturbed by human presence — a truly raw and unforgettable experience.
